About IC
(Instructional Computing)

Instructional Computing at Highline Community College provides facilities and technical support for students, faculty, and staff in numerous uses of technology in instruction. Instructional Computing supports over 1600 workstations in various locations both on and off campus, and over 30 servers in the Instructional Computing Center and Library server farms.

Instructional Computing employs 10 full time and 5 regular part time staff, in addition to a large contingent of student employees. Student employees participate in Practicum courses, Federal Work Study positions, and State Work Study funded Internships.

Instructional Computing provides technical support to users of ICC resources by phone, email, or in person approximately 90 hours per week. The ICC facility is open 87 hours per week. Online resources are maintained 24/7, and a server monitoring and paging application is used to detect problems and notify staff.

Primary activities center on the Instructional Computing Center (ICC, Building 30). The ICC houses approximately half of the student-use workstations on campus in 15 classroom labs and 3 open drop-in lab areas. In addition, there are 13 classroom or open labs in other areas of campus, 6 classroom labs at the Federal Way Campus, and numerous locations on and off campus which house smaller installations of equipment for instructional purposes, including Pure and Applied Science labs, the Health Occupations lab, and the Marine Science and Technology Center (MaST) at the Redondo Pier. IC staff also provide support for the public access workstations in the Library Information Commons and the development workstations in the Multimedia Instructional Development Studio on the 6th floor of the Library, for CAR instructor/presentation stations in classrooms and meeting rooms across campus, and for all computing resources available through Media Services, including COWs and Laptops.

Instructional Computing staff also provide support for faculty and students in online classes; provide technical support for faculty, Media staff, and Instructional Design staff working on development projects; do application development as needed; and participate in and support other campus projects as needed.
