Transportation has dramatic environmental, social and economic impacts.
Congestion is rising faster in metropolitan areas building the most
highway miles than in those metro areas building the fewest new highway
miles. Traffic problems are cited by Boeing and other businesses
concerned about future economic viability of the region. Fortunately, we
know the problems and the solutions, though we are having trouble
implementing them as effectively as have Portland and Vancouver. I will
focus on laying out the causes of traffic problems, realistic solutions
and actions people can take to help implement solutions.
